Peruvian Independence Day with Norma & Vilma Caterers - Johannesburg

After a very very long time, I ordered food in - from Norma & Vilma Caterers to celebrate Peruvian Independence Day!

They had a special menu for the occasion and I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

We started with the Causa De Atun - reminded me of a Salad Olivieh - a timbale of potato, avocado, tuna & boiled eggs. Absolutely delicious! Don’t believe them when they say it’s for 2, it’s quite filling for 4 appetiser portions!

The Aji De Galina was a very mild chicken casserole with pecans - very well cooked, but a bit mild for our tastes, perhaps I should have gone for the lamb and coriander stew option.

The Frijoles a la Nortena - Peruvian beans with a bit of bacon in there for flavouring was delicious and creamy.

Today, I served this with rice, but tomorrow, I think I’ll serve it with garlic bread. The crispy bread will go very well with these smooth & creamy dishes.

I served their most amazing Empanadas de Carne for tea. Oh yum! I should have definitely ordered more of these, but I wasn’t sure how well they would survive structurally if I had to store them overnight. I hope this goes on their permanent menu.

The crowning glory of this delivery though, were these absolutely delectable, moreish, decadent, bite sized bits of sin!

We are absolutely besotted with these ALFAJORES - shortbread biscuits filled with dulce de leche.

We ate a couple, before I could even plate them ☺️ While we might normally try a piece before plating, I think we inhaled 3 from the time we opened the box and transferred it to a plate ☺️

So delicious, not overly sweet. A nice crisp shortbread with a lovely caramelly dulce de leche filling. I’m in heaven and definitely going to have the sweetest dreams tonight.

Norma & Vilma Caterers have been in the catering business for 18 years. Quality ingredients come together to deliver excellent food with brilliant taste! The food was all very well packed and can easily go straight into the fridge or freezer without worrying about spillage or drying out.

I ordered a few dishes from their regular menu which came frozen and have gone straight into the freezer for the days that I just don’t want to cook.

Happy Independence Day to Peru and all Peruvians. Viva El Peru!
